Old age should burn and rave at close of day;

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,

Because their words had forked no lightning they

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,

And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight

Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,

Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.

Come, pen me a poem of plentiful passion,

Of fairies and flowers and fauns,

Come scintillate sharply in Sitwellian fashion.

Of parrots and perches and peacocks on lawns,

Yes, soothe me with songs of the serpentine sea,

Of Naiads from Narberth and nymphs from Pwlldu.

Come, croon me a carol of sorrel and coral,

Of mermaids and numerous moons,

Come, prattle a prologue with motive and moral,

Of peaches and prisms and prunes,

Yes, warble away on Ophelia and Hamlet,

Of the gnomes from Llanllwch and the elves from Llansamlet.
